We had a chat with Hans, owner of Camberwell Electrics and Designer Appliances Camberwell to talk about the business which has been open to the community since 1952.

How did Camberwell Electrics get started?
Camberwell Electrics is acknowledged as one of the oldest electrical Alliance retailers in Victoria, if not the oldest, and we commenced trading in 1952 on the corner of Camberwell and Toorak Roads..The founder and owner was Gus Jansson, a war veteran.
I bought a share of the business in 1988, by this time Camberwell Electrics was recognised as a leading retailer in all facets of the industry and particularly in the area of Air-conditioning which is still a very prominent area of the business.
In July 2017, My wife (Felicity) and I became the owners of Camberwell Electrics and we continue to service its many loyal customers, their children and their relatives, who value the friendly, knowledgeable staff who go to great lengths to continue to provide the best products at the best prices.
What does shopping local mean to you?
We are locally owned, I grew up living in Boroondara and our endeavour is to provide old fashion service to the local community that we love.
Who are your favourite local businesses?
We love Lullable Café and the whole Hartwell and Camberwell shopping strip.
We can’t wait to continue looking after our wonderful customers and the local community in this new COVID-19 normal.
How has COVID changed Camberwell Electrics?
COVID has changed the way we all do business – our sales consultants worked from home during lock-down were very good at advising customers over the phone and online. They are highly trained and have excellent product knowledge so we were able to continue providing a great quality services to our customers even with the lock-down challenges.
What are you most looking forward to in life in 2021?
We can’t wait to continue looking after our wonderful customers and the local community in this new COVID-19 normal. We have everything to help with their kitchen, laundry appliance and air-conditioning needs with COVID safe measures in store. We want to enjoy the continued success of our locally owned Melbourne business and the other local businesses in Boroondara.
