We were lucky enough this week to catch up with Adeline Yeak, owner of Zove Beauty, to discuss all things beauty, business and life during/post lock down.
We’ve been blown away by the number of people leaving us checkout notes online and also sending us messages on our socials to let us know that they’ve chosen to purchase from us as we are a local Australian Small Business.
How did your Zove Beauty get started?
Being brought up in a family that’s been in the beauty industry for over 20 years, I was always educated by my parents on how to best take care of my skin. My fondest memory of beauty was helping my fellow girlfriends curate their skincare routines when they were 17. I struggled with self-confidence growing up, but being able to do this grew my confidence, and without knowing it, I was supporting their confidence too.
I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs (extended family included), long car rides mainly consist of us kids listening to business calls that our parents would be on. Safe to say I picked up on a few tips here and there. I’ve always loved that my parents genuinely enjoyed what they did for a living, and had always wanted that for myself since I was a young girl.
Tell us a little bit more about Zove Beauty and what you do?
Everything that comes to life at Zove has to serve a purpose. For us, that means taking the guesswork out for our Zovers by making the product simple to use (the beauty industry is HUGE, and at times confusing). We acknowledge that most of us live a hectic and stressful lifestyle, so whenever you experience a Zove product, it should bring you a sense of calm and relaxation. We want to create things that help relieve people of their stress and also to build internal confidence in those who haven’t had a great experience with their skin journey. We’ve got beautiful Facial Rollers and Gua Sha tools, that are so good for massaging the face, and various Silk products including Silk Pillowcases and Silk Face Masks (goodbye, maskne!).
In 2020, my mindset has shifted – it’s about finding the best people behind the product I’m looking out for, and supporting them via choosing to shop with them. Every little bit counts!
What does shopping local mean to you?
This is an interesting one as we’ve all had such a crazy year (hello 2020), and it’s even more important for each and every one of us to think about our everyday spend. We’ve been blown away by the number of people leaving us checkout notes online and also sending us messages on Instagram / email to let us know that they’ve chosen to purchase from us as we are a local Australian Small Business. As a customer however, I have to be honest – my previous mindset was all about finding the best deal for great quality. In 2020, my mindset has shifted – it’s about finding the best people behind the product I’m looking out for, and supporting them via choosing to shop with them. Every little bit counts!
Who are your favourite local business?
My husband and I LOVE With Rice – we get takeaway from there so often. One of our favourite Thai restaurants in Melbourne and we are so thankful it’s so close to us! Tang Asian Grocer is amazing too – it’s been a game changer having them around during the lockdown!
We have been incredibly fortunate to see the rise in the “self-care” trend over the lock-down period as a solution to the ever increasing stress over that season. Ladies would choose to pamper themselves with the spare time they had at home, and we were there to deliver with stress-relieving facial products, and they truly appreciated that.
How has COVID changed Zove Beauty?
Completely. We have been incredibly fortunate to see the rise in the “self-care” trend over the lockdown period as a solution to the ever increasing stress over that season. Ladies would choose to pamper themselves with the spare time they had at home, and we were there to deliver with stress-relieving facial products, and they truly appreciated that. It was a “one man show” pre covid, and since the boom in our small business, I have been able to employ a new part time staff to help with Marketing and it’s been the best decision since! We are now saving up to invest in our new product development for 2021, so we’re really excited to see that come to pass.
What are you most looking forward to in life post lock down?
I’ve learnt to recognise what is more important in life over the lockdown period – and how I choose to spend my time post lockdown reflects what’s most important to me – friends and family.
