Camberwellness: Who We Are and How We Help
Are you tired of pain getting in the way of the things you love doing? Maybe it’s a stiff back in the morning, a sore hip on the walk to the shops, or a shoulder that disturbs your sleep. Perhaps you’ve been told it’s “just your age” and you should get used to it.
You don’t need to put up with this, and you don’t need to feel older than you are.
That belief sits at the heart of Camberwellness, a calm osteopathy and massage clinic in Camberwell that brings together two practices under one roof: Geoffrey Fong Osteopathic Services, led by osteopath Geoffrey Fong, and Backstroke Massage, led by remedial and oncology massage therapist Natalie Coote. Together, we help people, particularly those over 40, understand why they hurt, move better, and get back to living the life they want.
Who we help
Most of our clients are over 40: retired professionals, busy parents, grandparents, and people still working. They’re often dealing with back, neck, hip, knee or shoulder pain that has started to interfere with daily life: work, travel, hobbies, sport, gardening, or caring for grandkids.
Many want to stay active and independent for as long as possible, and some are keen to delay or avoid joint replacement surgery. Others have been through surgery, illness or cancer treatment and want to feel more like themselves again.
They want care that listens, explains clearly, and doesn’t rush them.
Our approach: find the underlying cause
We’re not looking for a quick fix. Pain is often the result of a chain of events: an old injury, a movement pattern that’s drifted over time, a habit at the desk or in the car, or muscles working overtime to protect a sore joint.
So we start by listening. We ask a lot of questions:
• Was there a triggering event?
• How long has it been going on?
• What makes it feel better, and what makes it worse?
• What would you really like to be doing that you’re being held back from?
These answers help us piece together your pain puzzle. We then assess how you move and how your body is compensating, and explain what we’ve found in plain English.
Working these things out goes a long way to recovery.
Gentle treatment, progressive recovery
Our signature approach is gentle. We don’t believe in “no pain, no gain”. Gentle, attentive treatment can still create meaningful change without adding stress to a body that’s already sore.
Treatment and exercise are dosed carefully and increased progressively, within your pain tolerance, over time. Our advice is often to “do less than you think you can, and monitor your recovery.” That way your body can adapt and build strength without flaring up and setting you back.
Recovery is a process, not a magic trick. Some people feel relief quickly; for many, lasting change takes a course of treatment, the right exercises and consistency at home. We’ll be honest about it.
Osteopathy with Geoffrey
Geoffrey’s approach is analytical and curious. He looks for the why: joints, discs, muscles, nerves, posture or habits? Often it’s a combination.
Osteopathy uses hands-on techniques to ease pain, improve joint movement and reduce muscle tension. Geoffrey treats concerns including:
• Lower back and neck pain
• Hip, knee and shoulder pain
• Tension headaches that start in the upper neck
• Sports and workplace injuries
• Age-related joint stiffness and pain
Geoffrey is a coach as much as a clinician. He’ll guide you on the right exercises and dosage to get you back to your pre-injury level and beyond, plus practical strategies for between sessions: pacing, posture, and when to use heat or ice.
It’s a “let’s solve this together” approach: straight-talking when something needs to change, and always kind.
Remedial and oncology massage with Natalie
Natalie brings a rare depth of experience to the treatment table. Before becoming a remedial massage therapist, she spent more than 20 years as a nurse, working in wound care, rehabilitation, private care in the UK, and aged care and rehab hospital settings in Australia.
That background shapes how she works. Natalie is known for monitoring and adjusting pressure carefully, noticing sensitivity to temperature, and helping clients on and off the table safely. She’s especially comfortable working with:
• Older adults and over-50s
• People living with Parkinson’s
• Oncology and palliative care clients
• Busy mums who struggle to put themselves first
Remedial massage aims to release tight muscles, ease knots and improve circulation and movement. The benefits often go beyond the physical: better sleep, more energy and a greater sense of vitality. For oncology clients, shoulder tension relief is often the most sought after.
As Natalie puts it: forget “No Pain, No Gain.” Remedial massage is about “Less Pain, More Again!”
Better together
Having osteopathy and remedial massage under one roof means we see your body from more than one angle. Some clients see Geoffrey for a specific injury and Natalie to ease tension and support recovery. Either way, we talk to each other, so your care is joined up.
Our work is part of your broader care, not a replacement for it. Where needed, we’ll encourage medical checks and work alongside your GP.
